Must-Have Newborn Products for New Parents

The first few weeks after we brought my son home from the hospital, I must have earned an imaginary gold medal in placing orders from the Target app. You too? Babies are trial and error, especially new babies! I learned that there are a few must-have newborn products that we couldn’t live without. We tried plenty of different solutions, and not all of them were what we needed.

You’ll probably hear lots of opinions on what you should or shouldn’t have on hand in those first few months. That’s okay because every baby is different! Be prepared and know that you might be making a few returns.

Once you figure out what works for you and your little one, though – you’ll want to shout it from the rooftops! That’s why I love this particular list of must-have newborn products. My husband and I didn’t want tons of unused baby things floating around the house, but we did want solutions that helped our little guy as we transitioned into parenthood.

Newborn Products

Check out my top list of must-have newborn products. Drop a note below to let me know if any of these worked for you!

Dockatot Deluxe

What Is It?

The Dockatot is designed as a newborn lounger and co-sleeper. It has plenty of different uses and comes in trendy patterns and designs. You’ve probably seen these all over Instagram!

Why We Got It

Real talk. I put off purchasing this for the longest time. I didn’t want to buy into the hype or let my baby get used to it. But when the 4-month sleep regression struck, we needed some rest. (It’s amazing what a little sleep deprivation will do to your mindset!)

Why We Love It

Thank you, Dockatot inventors – we owe you one.

The Dockatot helped us transition completely to the crib, making it a must-have newborn product if there ever was one! Because it’s so portable, it provides a familiar environment for snoozing anywhere. We packed it along and put our little guy down for naps whenever we traveled or visited family, which became a breeze.

(Disclaimer – please practice safe sleep habits! The Dockatot comes with warnings and instructions, and while I believe it’s a product that can work flexibly, you should only do what’s recommended.)

Gripe Water

What Is It?

Gripe water is an organic herbal supplement and remedy for babies. It’s a safe and gentle formula that can be used once a baby is 2 weeks old.

Why We Got It

Tummy troubles, hiccups, reflux, gas, and colic are pretty normal for a lot of babies. They’re so tiny, and their little systems just aren’t used to life outside the womb. We personally went through a lot of painful moments with our little guy. He was always so tense and had bad reflux and allergies, so we were on the lookout for ways to help him get relief and rest.

I am typically not a medicine person (even for myself – I’m stubborn!) so the thought of giving my infant something “extra” really stressed me out for a bit. After doing some research and talking to our doctors, however, we landed on gripe water as a natural solution for those moments when our guy was clearly uncomfortable.

Why We Love It

We jokingly call it “liquid gold” because it provides some magic “settle down” power! From our experience, a little bit goes a long way, and we hardly ever needed the full dose. I wish I knew the science behind this, but it’s a long-standing and very traditional option.

Swaddles

What Are They?

There are plenty of options when it comes to swaddling a newborn. A quick search will yield lots of results for how to safely swaddle with a blanket. The SwaddleMe 0-3 month swaddles worked for us because they were well-made and so convenient.

Why We Got It

Two words: startle reflex. This natural reaction causes a baby to raise their hands abruptly as if they’re falling. It often wakes them up from even the deepest sleep, and it’s tough to control. Swaddling not only mimics the coziness that they had for months in the womb, but it keeps this reflex at bay until it naturally fades.

Why We Love It

Easy, washable, snug, and safe. Swaddling with a blanket just about made me crazy! I was always worried about the loose fabric, and plenty of babies are strong enough to break free. The SwaddleMe brand comes in so many cute prints, and the velcro is strong and secure. Sleep is possible with the right swaddle, mama!

Owlet Sock

What Is It?

The Owlet Smart Sock monitors heart rate and oxygen levels through a small sensor found in a sock wrap. The sock comes in three sizes and connects to a base station and a mobile app. The sensor provides live readings and sounds an alarm when anything drops out of normal range.

Why We Got It

I know that the Owlet Sock is a splurge item and one that many pediatricians will tell you that you don’t really need. We didn’t personally buy this until our last night in the hospital after delivery. As exhausted as we were, we could not relax and go to sleep. After talking it over, my husband and I decided to purchase this to have peace of mind.

Why We Love It

As first-time parents, this just helped us relax enough to get some shut-eye. Even when I felt nervous, I knew that the Owlet was on and monitoring. In almost 7 months, it’s only alerted us 2 times when something was “off.” Both times have been during a cold and stuffy nose, and I was so relieved to be able to know that and go get my baby to provide help. While I don’t think you should let yourelf become obsessed with checking the app (ha, speaking from experience!).. I know how much confidence we have in this. If the pricetag seems a little high, check to see if you can use HSA or FSA funds!

NoseFrida

What Is It?

The NoseFrida is one of those products that my husband said he’d never, eveuse for our babies. By the picture, you can pretty much guess what this does. Babies have a tough time clearing out their noses when they’re congested, and this allows you to help.

Why We Got It

I mentioned before that our little man was born with some allergies, and one of the ways we discovered that was through some bad congestion. I’ll never forget the night when he was beside our bed and his oxygen levels dipped low (according to the Owlet!). We scooped him up and could immediately tell he was struggling to breathe through his nose. It was a long night, and we went out and got a NoseFrida first thing that morning.

Why We Love It

Okay, let’s be real. Sucking out your child’s nose is not the most fun thing you will do as a parent. When you’re little one is struggling, you might be ready to do just about anything! The NoseFrida became a must-have newborn product for us because it was recommended by our pediatrician. When combined with gentle saline spray, it is super effective. It’s the product you’ll hate to love!

White Noise Machine

What Is It?

A white noise machine provides background noise that often drowns out other sounds in the nursery or in your home. According to many sleep consultants, it can also signal to babies that it’s time to sleep. It’s a positive association that you can use during the early days or later during sleep training!

Why We Got It

I had several mom friends recommend this to me, so I put it on my registry from the get-go. Our experience has been totally positive. White noise = time to sleep!

Why We Love It

A white noise machine creates a good sleep environment. Combined with a super dark room, it can help establish good nap and daytime sleep routines. You can also pack it up and take it with you, so it’s great for turning unfamiliar places into spaces that are cozy enough for sleep.

There you have it! Hopefully, this starter list of must-have newborn products provides some inspiration when you’re not sure what solution will work best. What’s on your “must have” baby list?
